Incorporated in Edmonton, Canada, Fluid Modeling Group is comprised of a group of technical specialists with 30+ years of experience serving the environmental and oil and gas industries worldwide. Dr. Dan Zhang, CEO, Director

Dr. Dan Zhang holds B.Sc. (1977) and M.Sc. (1981) degrees both in Chemical Engineering from Tianjin University, China and Ph.D. degree (1990) in Chemical Engineering from the University of Ottawa, Canada.

Having served as Technical Advisor at Schlumberger DBR Technology Center, General Manager at DBR Software Inc., DBR Group of Companies, Post-Doctor Fellow/Research Associate at the University of Ottawa, Assistant Professor at Nanjiing University of Technology, China and Field Engineer at Daking Oil Field, China, Dan brings a wealth of knowledge and experience. 

His expertise lies in fluid properties and phase behavior for conventional and heavy oil, equation-of-state modeling, Engineering Thermodynamics, flow assurance on solid precipitation and deposition, gas hydrate formation and inhibition, PVT analysis and predictions, gas/NGL treating and CO2 capture experimental investigation and process simulation and HAPs/VOCs/hydrocarbon emission predictions. He is an author and co-author of more than 60 technical papers and co-author of two patents through his services to the oil and gas industry in the past 20+ years.

Dr. Zhang was a member of Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta for 1997-2016 and a member of Canadian Society for Chemical Engineers for 2004-2016.

Dr. Julian Zuo, CTO, Director

Dr. Julian Zuo holds B.Sc. (1982) and M.Sc. (1986) degrees both in Chemical Engineering from Zhejiang University of Technology, China and Ph.D. degree (1989) in Chemical Engineering from China University of Petroleum.

Julian has been playing multiple professional roles in both academia and industry in various countries, served as Technical Advisor at Schlumberger; Senior Project Manager at DBR Software Inc., DBR Group of Companies; Post-Doctor Fellow/Research Associate at Technical University of Denmark and Ecole des Mines de Paris, France, and Lecture and Adjunct Professor at China University of Petroleum.

Julian has published 84 technical papers in peer reviewed journals and 137 technical papers and presentations at conferences and workshops, co-invented 20 granted US patents. His primary research expertise lies in Downhole Fluid Analysis Interpretation, Machine Learning, Model and Algorithm Development, CO2 Capture, CO2 Storage, Enhanced Oil Recovery, Reservoir Simulation, Formation Test, Reservoir Fluid Geodynamics, Advanced Reservoir Characterization, Unconventional Tight Gas and Oil, Heavy Oil, Fluid Property Analysis, Phase Behavior study, Flow Assurance, and Miscible Gas Injection Process, in experimental measurement and modelling.

Dr. Zuo is a member of Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta, a member of Canadian Society for Chemical Engineers, and a member of Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). He also served for SPE as member of SPE Book Development Committee (2011 –2014), member of SPE Education and Accreditation Committee (2012–2015) and serves as Technical Editor of SPE Reservoir Evaluation & Engineering, SPE Journal, Journal of Canadian Petroleum Technology, SPE Projects, Facilities & Construction and as Mediator of SPE Petrowiki (2013–present).

Dr. Haijun Xu, R&D Director, Director

Dr. Haijun Xu holds B.Sc. degree (1999) in Chemical Engineering from Tsinghua University, China and Ph.D. degree (2004) in Polymer Engineering from the University of Akron. USA.

Haijun once acted as Senior Project Manager and VP Technology at Genoil, Canada; Process Engineer at Stantec Consulting Ltd. Canada, and Post-Doctor Fellow/Research Associate at University of Calgary, Canada.

Haijun has a diverse background and work experiences in thermodynamics, phase separation, fluid dynamics, process design and control and system simulations for oil refinery project, feasibility study and front end engineering design, polymer processing with material characterization, sulfur recovery, gas treatment with acid gas removal and CO2 capture, hydrogen recovery with pressure swing adsorption, and waste water treatment.

Dr. Xu was a member of Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (2010-2022), and a member of Council and Secretary General for Tsinghua Alumni Association in Edmonton for 2012 –2016.

Dr. Na (Jenna) Jia, Senior Consultant to FMG

Dr. Na (Jenna) Jia holds B.Sc. degree (1999) in Chemical Engineering from Tsinghua University, China and Ph.D. degree (2007) in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Calgary, Canada.

Jenna once served as Senior Fluid Analysis Project Leader at DBR Technology Center, Schlumberger Canada. Her primary research expertise lies in fluid property analysis, phase behavior study, Flow Assurance, Enhanced Oil Recovery, both in experimental measurement and modelling. She was in charge of managing and supervising numerous commercial projects, acting as a key contributor in making commercial proposals and business negotiations. As an assigned instructor, Dr. Jia offered courses/trainings to the company’s engineers and specialists with the teaching experiences she gained from the University of Calgary through numbers of undergraduate courses.

Dr. Jia is a member of Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) and Saskatchewan (APEGS), a member of Canadian Society for Chemical Engineers, and a member of Society of Petroleum Engineers.

Dr. Jia is currently Associate Professor and Chair of Program of Petroleum Systems Engineering at the University of Regina, Canada.

Dr. Jian (Johnny) Chen, Senior Consultant to FMG

Dr. Jian Chen received his B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical Engineering from Tsinghua University, China in 1985, 1987 and 1990, respectively. He has been the academic staff member in the Department of Chemical Engineering, Tsinghua University, China since 1990, and becoming Full Professor in 2001. He was invited as a visiting scholar to DBR Group of Companies in 2001 and worked as senior software developer for DBR Software Inc. for one year.

Professor Chen’s research expertise lies in chemical engineering thermodynamics and separation processes, especially in the technical domain of separation of greenhouse gas CO2 through absorption and adsorption processes. His research work was supported by National 863 projects (2008), National Natural Science Foundation key project (2012), Europe FP7 Project (2014) and National Science and Technology Support Plan project (2015). Through his research on molecular design of new absorbents, thermodynamics and reaction kinetics, energy integration and process simulation, it has been demonstrated that the energy consumption of CO2 capture process can be significantly reduced.
